Oscar Peterson – Great Connection

Great Connection is a superb Oscar Peterson Trio album, recorded for the German MPS label in October 1971 and released in 1974. It brings together Peterson on piano with Danish bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and drummer Louis Hayes, creating a beautifully balanced trio sound that combines Peterson's dazzling technique with the rhythmic flexibility and interaction of two exceptional accompanists.

The album is particularly significant because it represents one of the early recording collaborations between Peterson and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, who would become one of the pianist's most important musical partners over the following decades. Pedersen's powerful yet agile bass playing is an ideal match for Peterson, while Louis Hayes provides the rhythmic drive and subtle responsiveness that allows the trio to move effortlessly between swing, ballads and more expansive improvisation.

The programme opens with “Younger Than Springtime”, the Rodgers and Hammerstein standard from South Pacific, followed by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick's “Where Do We Go From Here”. Peterson brings his characteristic combination of elegance and rhythmic sophistication to both pieces, before turning to the beautifully understated “Smile”, the Charlie Chaplin composition that has become one of the great standards of the popular songbook.

Side A continues with “Soft Winds”, the Fletcher Henderson/Fred Royal swing classic. It is one of the album's most energetic performances and provides plenty of opportunity for Peterson's famously fluid piano technique, while Pedersen and Hayes maintain an exceptionally tight rhythmic foundation.

The second side opens with Duke Ellington's “Just Squeeze Me”, followed by Ferde Grofé's “On The Trail”. These performances demonstrate the trio's ability to take familiar compositions and transform them through extended improvisation, with Peterson moving effortlessly between delicate melodic passages and fast, technically demanding runs.

The album closes with “Wheatland”, an original Peterson composition and the only piece on the seven-track programme written by the pianist himself. Its extended form gives the trio room to develop the piece collectively, making it an especially rewarding conclusion to the record. The complete album runs for around 43 minutes and remains an excellent example of Peterson's mature trio playing during his influential MPS period.

For collectors of Oscar Peterson vinyl, MPS Records, German jazz, piano jazz and classic jazz trio recordings, Great Connection is a particularly appealing title. The combination of Peterson, Pedersen and Hayes is outstanding, while the MPS recording environment and Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer's production give the album the clear, detailed sound for which the label became renowned. It is an essential addition for anyone interested in Peterson's 1970s catalogue or European jazz of the period.
