Santana – Caravanserai

Released in 1972, Caravanserai is one of the most adventurous and atmospheric albums in the Santana catalogue. The band's fourth studio album marked a significant shift away from the more straightforward Latin-rock and psychedelic sound of their breakthrough records, embracing jazz fusion, extended instrumental arrangements, spiritual themes and experimental percussion. Recorded at Columbia Studios in San Francisco between February and May 1972, the album was produced by Carlos Santana and drummer Michael Shrieve.

The change in direction is immediately apparent with “Eternal Caravan Of Reincarnation”, an atmospheric opening that introduces the album's expansive, almost spiritual character before moving into the fluid jazz-rock of “Waves Within” and “Look Up (To See What's Coming Down)”. Rather than relying on conventional verse-and-chorus structures, Santana and the band build the music around extended instrumental passages, layered percussion, keyboards and Carlos Santana's highly expressive guitar.

The album features an exceptional line-up. Alongside Carlos Santana are guitarist Neal Schon, keyboardist Gregg Rolie, drummer Michael Shrieve, bassist Douglas Rauch, percussionists José “Chepito” Areas, James Mingo Lewis and Armando Peraza, plus contributions from Wendy Haas, Tom Coster, Tom Rutley and others. This expanded ensemble gives Caravanserai an unusually rich rhythmic and tonal palette, with Latin percussion and Santana's guitar woven into a sophisticated jazz-fusion framework.

“Song Of The Wind” is one of the album's standout performances, giving Santana and Neal Schon room to develop long, melodic guitar lines over Gregg Rolie's organ and the intricate rhythm section. “All The Love Of The Universe” pushes the album further into its spiritual territory, while “Future Primitive” and “La Fuente Del Ritmo” place percussion firmly at the centre of the music. The latter was composed by percussionist James Mingo Lewis and is one of the clearest demonstrations of the album's fascination with rhythm and texture.

Another highlight is “Stone Flower,” Santana's interpretation of the Antonio Carlos Jobim composition, which fits naturally into the album's fusion of Brazilian, Latin and jazz influences. The closing “Every Step Of The Way”, composed by Michael Shrieve, stretches beyond nine minutes and provides an expansive finale, featuring an orchestra arrangement by Tom Harrell.

Caravanserai was a bold artistic departure at the time, and although it was less commercially direct than Santana's earlier work, it was a substantial success, reaching No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 8 in the US. It has subsequently become regarded as one of Santana's most important albums, particularly among listeners interested in jazz fusion, progressive rock, Latin jazz and instrumental rock.

For collectors of Santana vinyl, 1970s Latin rock, jazz fusion and psychedelic rock, Caravanserai is an essential album. It captures Santana at a fascinating transitional point, expanding the band's sound into something more exploratory, atmospheric and sophisticated while retaining the distinctive percussion and guitar work that made the group so influential.
